Boaters discovered a vehicle while cleaning up the Black River over the weekend. Volunteers Saturday were helping remove debris from the river caused by damaging winter floods when SONAR picked up a small SUV deep in the water. Marine Deputies along with the St. Clair County Dive Team aided in removing the vehicle but found no passengers in or around the wreckage. It’s condition led authorities to conclude it had been submerged for some time. Once on land, the SUV went through inspection while detectives interviewed nearby residents for leads. They discovered in the winter of 2016, someone took a vehicle out on the iced-over river where it broke through and sank while the driver fled the scene. Authorities are still investigating the situation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.
