Parks, museums, and canal to benefit from council spending

It’s a jam-packed agenda for the only meeting of the month for Port Huron City Council, with nearly a million dollars slated for parks, museums, and more. City council Monday will be asked to spend nearly $300,000 to Valley City Signs for phase two of a way finding signage project. They will be placed at area parks and attractions and are being funded by federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. New park equipment for Renaissance and Pine Grove parks, totaling nearly $600,000 is also on the agenda. That would come from a combination federal dollars, grants, and the general fund.

Neighboring townships will help pitch in to cover the costs associated with dredging the Black River Canal in Port Huron. The new intergovernmental agreement would share 25% of the costs of dredging the canal with Port Huron Township and another 25% with Fort Gratiot Township. That could provide up to $30,000 annually to help fund dredging. Also Monday, Port Huron Museums is expected officially receive $50,000 to re-establish free museum admission for a year. Monday’s meeting takes place at 7pm at the Municipal Office Center.
