Preliminary discussions held regarding pot shop ordinance

It’s a first step towards allowing the sale of adult use recreational marijuana in the City of Port Huron. A special session meeting of Port Huron City Council was Thursday night, consisting of planning commission members and council members. Thursday’s meeting marked the first phase of drafting an ordinance to allow the sale of recreational pot. Port Huron City Manager James Freed says the city has surveyed residents and the overwhelming majority support the idea of marijuana stores. Freed says the next step is to decide how many and where they would be located. “You have both the zoning component, which is more planning commission, then you have the licencing component, which is a city council decision.” Freed says a first reading of the ordinance could take place as soon as September, with licensing shortly thereafter. He tells WPHM that council would like to give city residents a first shot at licenses if and when they become available, before making them available to the general public.
