Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Canadian oil transport company Enbridge Energy, have reached an agreement that will result in the replacement of their line 5 pipeline under the St. Clair River and Mackinac Straits. The controversial oil pipeline, now more than 60-years old, runs from western Canada to Sarnia, Ontario by cutting through Michigan. Environmental groups, including the Michigan Sierra Club, are adamantly opposed to an agreement reached between Snyder and Enbridge. The deal sets a timeline for the future usefulness of the pipeline and will require Enbridge to shut Line 5 down temporarily during storms that cause high waves. Activists believe the only way to foolproof Line 5 is to decommission it.
