With Port Huron’s new central fire station now open on 10th Street, what happens to the old central station on River Street near SC4? We recently asked that question to Port Huron City Manager James Freed, who told us it has a date with the wrecking ball.
“It’s structurally failing, the walls are crumbling… that building has to come down,” Freed told WPHM. “I imagine that building will be down in the next 60 days.”
As for what happens in it’s place, Freed says the waterfront parcel along with others in the area will be part of a study to determine the next steps.
“That’s a big chunk of land from the 10th Street bridge to 7th street bridge,” said Freed. “We want a land use study to look at a holistic approach to that area, what can be done there, similar to across the (Black) River.”
The city charter mandates that voters must decide weather or not the city can sell waterfront property. Freed says that question could be placed on the ballot as soon as this coming May.
