Options narrowed down for Huron Ave rebuild

The results are in from a survey regarding the reconstruction of Port Huron’s main street. A group comprised of local residents, business owners, and city officials formed earlier this year to evaluate MDOT’s proposed plans to overhaul the I-94 business loop from the Military Street Bridge to Glenwood. Part of the evaluation included a survey that was circulated back in April, asking residents how they think traffic should be maintained and what changes they’d like to see made to the thoroughfare.

Feedback suggests the public wants a complete road closure during construction as a way of speeding up the process and prefer the project be scheduled around Boat Week. The group is suggesting that construction begins after the 2026 Blue Water Fest and be completed before 2027’s festival. Survey results also show support for a road diet, reducing the lanes of traffic in each direction from two to one, and adding and a center turn lane.

What to do with the space gained from the lane reductions is still up for discussion. Options include adding angled parking to both sides of the street, adding bike lanes to one side with angled parking on the other, or adding protected bike lanes to both sides of the street. There is also an option to leave the traffic and parking configuration unchanged. Findings will be presented to City Council later this summer, who will send a final recommendation to MDOT.
