More than three weeks after she was reported missing, Harbor Beach police confirm the body of 36-year-old Shana Umbreit was found Saturday morning.
Umbreit’s friends and family first lost contact with her on January 23rd and filed a report with police two days later. Surveillance video last placed her at Brown’s Market in Harbor Beach around 9:30 the night she disappeared.
In the days that followed, community members organized search parties and launched multiple social media campaigns in hopes of finding her. Michigan State Police and other outside agencies also joined the search effort.
Authorities have not released details on where her body was found, or whether foul play is suspected. Police previously stated though that they were concerned about the circumstances surrounding Umbreit’s disappearance. Results of an autopsy conducted Sunday have yet not been made public.
In a statement, Harbor Beach police say the investigation remains active and encourages anyone with information to contact the department at 989-479-3353 or hbpd@harborbeach.com
Officials are also asking the public to respect the privacy of Umbreit’s family and loved ones as they grieve her loss.
