
The Canada Border Services Agency says officers seized nearly 200 kilograms, or more than 440lbs, of cocaine during a recent inspection at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry.
According to the CBSA, the discovery was made on July 23rd during a secondary inspection of a commercial truck arriving from the United States. Officers found seven duffel bags inside the trailer containing bricks of suspected cocaine. The total weight was 197 kilograms with an estimated street value of $24.6 million Canadian, roughly $18 million in U.S. currency.
The driver, 29-year-old Onkar Kalsi of Caledon, Ontario, was arrested and turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He faces charges of importing cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The CBSA says the investigation is ongoing. Between January 1 and July 10 of this year, the agency reports officers have seized more than 1,100 kilograms of cocaine originating from the United States.
