Sarnia Police have made an arrest in connection with a suspected arson.
The blaze broke out around 3:30 a.m. on July 13th at an unoccupied home in the 1100 block of Confederation Street. Upon entering the house, firefighters quickly noted the smell of gasoline, and investigators later found further evidence the fire was set intentionally. Police say a man was spotted on surveillance cameras bringing an object resembling a gas can into the house, and a hot plate hooked to a timer was also found at the fire’s point of origin.

The blaze caused significant damage to both the interior and exterior of the house, but no injuries were reported and nearby buildings were not affected.

Following an investigation, 49-year-old Gordon Jelavic of Sarnia was taken into custody in connection with the crime.  Jelavic is now being charged with arson and is due in an Ontario court on August 12th.
