According to the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, a 24-year-old Hamtramck man has died after drowning at North Port Huron Jellystone Park in Forester Township over the weekend.
Emergency crews including Sheriff’s Deputies, Croswell and Sanilac EMS units, and the Port Sanilac Fire Department responded to the campground around 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Investigators say the man and his girlfriend were playing catch with a football in the park’s pond when he went below water and did not resurface. Bystanders were able to pull him from the water and began CPR prior to the arrival of first responders. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim’s name has not yet been released, and the case remains under investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office is using the experience to remind the public to practice water safety by swimming with a partner, wearing a life jacket, and knowing the water’s depth before entering.
