Paper production returning to Port Huron

Port Huron is making paper again!

The former Domtar paper mill in Port Huron is set to resume operations under new management. Legacy Paper Group is restarting one of the paper machines at the facility, bringing paper manufacturing back to the site for the first time in more than four years. Approximately 45 to 50 jobs are expected to be created as a result of the restart. Production will focus on lightweight specialty papers, such as food wrappers and candy packaging, thanks in part to a surge in food delivery services since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legacy Paper Group Managing Director, Mark Bessette tells WPHM’s Paul Miller, the project brings together experienced workers from both the former Domtar mill and the Dunn Paper mill. Bessette says a second paper machine could also be restarted in the future if market demand supports it. Legacy Paper Group is leasing the facility owned by the Port Huron Multimodal Industrial Hub, which has kept the facility in working order since Domtar closed it’s doors in 2021. Final preparations are underway to bring the equipment back online.
