Port Huron mayor seeks city charter update

Port Huron Mayor Anita Ashford is calling for an update to the city’s charter, saying it’s long overdue.
Speaking with WPHM’s Paul Miller this week, Ashford said the current charter limits city council’s role in overseeing important decisions and provides too much authority to the city manager. She says she believes revising the charter could help resolve some of the recent disputes among city leaders.

Under Michigan law, the process can begin with either a petition signed by five percent of registered voters or a supermajority vote by city council. If voters approve moving forward, a charter commission is elected to draft proposed changes. Those revisions must be reviewed by the governor before facing final approval from voters.

Ashford has not yet outlined specific changes but says her goal is to strengthen local government.
