St. Clair County officials are clearing up confusion after last night’s severe thunderstorms prompted the use of the county’s outdoor warning sirens. Justin Westmiller, the County’s Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, tells WPHM the sirens were activated due to forecasted high winds.
“We sound them for a plethora of issues including straight line winds over 70 miles per hour. The weather service put out an alert… and we wanted to make sure our population was alerted to the fact that very severe weather was coming.”
National Weather Service senior forecaster Steve Considine tells WPHM most of the damage from the storm system was concentrated in the central part of the lower peninsula. Locally, he says there were a few downed trees on area roadways and some isolated power outages. One of the larger outages includes the Capac area, who’s school district is closed today due to no electricity.
