Error made in property tax assessments

The City of Port Huron is notifying residents that an error was made when computing the amount of tax that will be owed in the coming year. Assessment notices were sent out to residents this past week, informing them of their property’s taxable, assessed, and State equalized values. According to City manager James Freed, all of those values were correct on the notices. However, there was a decimal placement error when it came to calculating the change in taxes from the previous year. For example, if the notice stated an increase in taxes of $1500 from the previous year, it should actually read $150. Freed says new assessment notices will be sent to property owners in the coming days.
