New green trash and recycling bins are appearing at the curb all throughout Port Huron Township as Waste Management prepares to automate collection. Come January first, all trash must be placed inside the new 96-gallon containers, called “toters”, which have been distributed to to each household. Township Supervisor Bob Lewandowski believes they are big enough to accommodate most families, but adds additional cans can be added at an additional cost of $8 per month.
Lewandowski says Waste Management planned to automate collection during the contract renewal process but admits the implementation is happening faster than he anticipated. Although Port Huron Township is one of the first area communities to adopt such a practice, he says it’s the way the industry is going, as it’s more efficient and puts less strain on worker’s bodies. Those who need additional containers or have questions can contact Waste Management at 866-797-9018.
