Port Huron City Council has  approved an $834,000 bid for emergency repairs to the parking garage beneath the Municipal Office Center. City Manager James Freed addressed council during Monday’s meeting and explained that the parking deck has become a safety hazard for the police department.

“We have concrete that is falling on patrol cars,” said Freed. “A lot of the tension cables have also snapped, that needs to be repaired.”

Freed also acknowledging the fact that last year, Port Huron residents approved the sale of the aging building. However, with no new location identified to house city hall, Freed says they don’t have a choice.

“We can’t ignore these issues, it’s a safety issue,” said Freed. “So the purchase price for city hall just went up, about $833,000.”

Also approved last night were some final adjustments to the 2023-24 fiscal year budget. Freed says expenses actually came in below budget, even though the city had to deal with some unforeseen expenses from the Black River Canal, and an extensive city-wide cleanup effort following severe storm damage last July.
