Woman and child killed in two vehicle crash

Two passengers in two separate vehicles both died Tuesday morning following a two-car collision in northwest Sanilac County. It happened shortly before 8am at the intersection of Bay City-Forestville Road and Van Dyke Road in Greenleaf Township. A car heading eastbound reportedly failed to stop at the stop sign on M-53 and struck the passenger side of southbound van. The eastbound car was driven by a 17 year old female from Unionville with a 5 year old rear seat passenger. The driver of the car was treated at the scene and later taken to an area hospital. The 5 year old was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The southbound van was being operated by a 73 year old man with a 65 year old woman in the passenger seat, both from Elkton.  The man was ejected from the vehicle was taken transferred to two Thumb area hospitals for treatment. His passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Both vehicles entered a yard on the southeast corner of the intersection following the crash. Sanilac County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by Marlette and Cass City EMS, Cass City Fire, and the Michigan State Police. No further details, including names of those involved, have been shared by authorities.
