Port Huron’s newest downtown retail store could very well be a recreational marijuana dispensary. A special use permit for a building at 404 Quay Street was approved unanimously Tuesday by the Port Huron Planning Commission. Building owner Gene Harrison says it will compliment his other establishments in that block, including Bootlegger’s Axe Throwing and Wings Etcetera.

“Our job is to elevate the Quay Street experience,” said Harrison. “Like Fremont Street in Vegas… we want you to have that experience. When you come to Quay Street you’re expecting to have fun.”

He has partnered with JARS Cannabis who is an “experienced operator” according to Harrison. Concerns were raised about the location of the dispensary in relation to nearby parks and the community college. The planning commission determined that none of the nearby parks have children’s equipment and that the community college is not considered a traditional K-12 school, so the location is believed to satisfy the city ordinance. Additionally, Harrison teased the opening of a new speakeasy bar also coming soon to the 400 block of Quay. The dispensary is expected to open in the next two months.
