A factory in St. Clair will be quadrupling in size and hiring nearly a thousand new workers as part of an expansion project announced yesterday. Magna Electric Vehicle Structures, who operates an existing manufacturing plant on Range Road, will be expanding to a total footprint of one million square feet. Assistant General manager Gregg Ross, speaking to WPHM during Tuesday’s groundbreaking, says 920 openings will need to be filled.

“Everything from engineering, purchasing, human resources, finance, accounting… toolmakers, electricians… we’re hiring everything, we need a lot of people to support that volume,” said Ross.

Ross says the expansion is expected to be completed by the end of next year with hiring beginning in 2024. Magna is a Canadian company that builds a variety of components for the automotive industry and has 25 other facilities in Michigan. The St. Clair plant manufactures battery enclosures for electric vehicles, including the new GMC Hummer EV.  Yesterday’s groundbreaking was coupled with a $44 million investment from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
