Spraying for invasive caterpillars will begin this week in St. Clair County. According to officials, 5300 acers will be treated by Al’s Aerial Spraying starting in the early morning hours Thursday. The water based insecticide called BTK is proven effective against Spongy Moths and will only affect caterpillars that are feeding on the tree canopies at the time of application. Weather conditions are expected to be ideal for spraying Thursday, with winds less than 10 miles per hour and a low relative humidity. If weather conditions change, spraying will be postponed until conditions improve, most likely within a day or two. Much of the spraying is to take place in Clyde Township along the Black River, with maps available on the county’s website.
