One of three charter amendments to advance in Marysville

Voters in the City of Marysville next November will be asked whether or not to approve revised language in the city’s charter regarding purchasing limits for the City Manager. This after two other proposals failed to receive enough votes to move forward last night.  One would have extended the Mayor’s term from two to four years. The other would have removed language in the charter forbidding relatives of city council members from holding a position within city government.

“Because the charter was written so long ago, we did an extensive and exhaustive review of the charter,” said Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Hayman. “These were the only three changes that were proposed.”

Hayman voted against expanding the Mayor’s term and also voted to keep the nepotism language in the charter, describing it as “forward thinking” for 1965 when the current charter was written. A supermajority of five councilmembers was needed to advance the issues to the ballot in November of 2022. Of them, only the amendment regarding the City Manager’s purchasing limit, will move forward.
