Port Huron City Council has approved a plan to spend $18 million in federal COVID-19 relief dollars. During last night’s city council meeting, members unanimously approved the plan to spend American Rescue Plan funds as proposed by City Manager James Freed. Speaking to WPHM, Freed says  the funding will be used to address both short term and long term healthcare and economic development needs.

“You can’t use the money on roads, you can’t just give the money out to any non profit,” said Free. “It’s got to be specifically for safe public facilities… access to health care and wellness, and economic development.”

Freed says one of the projects outlined in the plan is to expanding and improve upon the daycare facility at the Palmer Park Recreation Center. Other groups set to benefit from the package include the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County, Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce, the People’s Clinic, and Tri-Hosptial EMS.
