Local public safety officials are offering a few reminders for those wishing to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks. St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King tells WPHM the number one rule is to not discharge fireworks while under the influence of alcohol, which is both illegal, and potentially harmful.

“If you’re going to enjoy some adult beverages wait until the fireworks are over if you’re the one that’s going to be lighting them off,” said King. “Tragically just about every year we here about a pretty serious injury here in St. Clair County directly related to fireworks.”

In the City of Port Huron, fireworks can be discharged on private property up until 11:45pm June 29th through July 4th. Violators could face a $1,000 fine. Fireworks ordinances do vary depending on the city and township you live in.

Sheriff King says you should check with your municipality and also give your neighbors a heads up before you plan to light off those bottle rockets. He adds that fireworks should never be discharged from inside a building and that pets should be kept indoors during fireworks displays.
