Port Huron City Council could vote tonight to spend the nearly $18-million dollars in federal American Rescue Plan funding. City Manager James Freed plans to spend just over $8-million dollars this year on what he calls the city’s most immediate needs, including public facilities.
“We prepared a list of capital needs at our facilities, whether it’s Palmer Park… or public works facilities that provide essential services,” said Freed. “There’s also investments we need to make into supporting local businesses, including the EDA for small business development.” His plan calls for the Economic Development Alliance and Blue Water Chamber of Commerce to receive $200,000 each in funding. The remaining money would be spend the following year.
Also during tonight’s meeting, City Council will hold public hearings about the downtown Port Huron city streetscape special assessment district. Members could also approve approximately $10,000 in funding for new night vision goggles for the police department. Tonight’s special session will begin at 5:45pm followed by a regular session at 7pm at the Municipal Office Center.
