Port Huron is a step closer to playing host to a monument honoring fallen Tuskegee Airmen who died during training over Lake Huron during World War II. The organization Diving With A Purpose plans to dedicate the new memorial  later this summer. Erik Denson is with the organization Diving With a Purpose and tells WPHM how members of the all Black air squadron from Tuskegee, Alabama ended up in Michigan.

“After training from Tuskegee Institute, they went to the Michigan area because it mimicked the climate and terrain of the European theater,” said Denson. He says a total of four planes crashed into Lake Huron during training exercises, including that of Lieutenant  Frank Moody that was discovered in Lake Huron in 2014.

The Tuskegee Airmen memorial, located near the international Flag Plaza north of the Blue Water Bridge, will be dedicated with a special ceremony on Saturday, August 28th.
