Organizers are  preparing for the 97th running of the Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race. Bayview Yacht Club Race Chairman Greg Thomas tells WPHM over 200 boats have signed up to participate in the race this year, which is scheduled to take place July 24th. Thomas says a point of frustration again this year will be docking on Mackinac Island, saying the state owned harbor again will not be able to accomidate all the racers.

“We’ve got 77 boats that are in the harbor, and 130 have to figure out where they’re going to go, such as Mackinaw City or St. Ignace,” said Thomas. “Everybody wants to be on the island, so that’s been a huge disappointment.”

This year’s race will once again only involve one course. Thomas says all participants will follow the shore as opposed to the longer Cove Island course. The Cove Island course would take participants through Canadian waters, which are currently off limits due to cross border travel restrictions. Approximately 200 boats are registered for this year’s race.
