The Pere Marquette Railroad Bridge which has stood watch over Port Huron for nearly 90 years is a step closer to coming down. The Port Huron Yacht Club this past weekend approved funding for the bascule bridge’s removal. The property in which the bridge lies on, commonly called Scenic Point, was purchased by the club in 2012. Port Huron Yacht Club Commodore Pam Wall says a proposal to spend up to $300,000 to remove the structure was passed overwhelming by the club’s membership. Wall tells WPHM she was in the minority opinion. “I, for one, am sorry to see it going,” said Wall. “I think it is something that just says ‘Port Huron’ to me.” She adds that there is no timeline for demolition. The US Army Corps of Engineers, in a demolition permit that was granted earlier this year, stated that yacht club must compile photographs and engineering plans of the structure prior to removal.
