The City of Port Huron is announcing the creation of a new office of diversity, equity, and inclusion. During a Wednesday morning press conference, city manager James Freed was joined by representatives from the NAACP, Blue Water Indigenous Alliance, and the Blue Water Center for Independent Living. Freed says the new office would serve as a liaison to disadvantaged populations in the city and to make sure funding is disbursed equally. It would also promote access for minority and disadvantaged populations to recreation and programming opportunities, including McMorran Arena. Freed, speaking to WPHM, says it has been a priority of council for some time now. “This is a goal of theirs (council’s) that we are implementing,” said Freed. “We’re not responding to a crisis, we’re not responding to an incident… we’re resounding to the future.” Freed says the new part time position would report to the the community development office and could eventually become a full time job. A salary has yet to be set by council.
