The State of Michigan will need to redraw all of its state house, senate, and congressional districts by 2022, not just because of next year’s census, but also due to a ballot initiative passed by voters last year. Jamie Lyons Eddy from Voters not Politicians, the grassroots organization that placed the issue on the ballot, says the next steps will be up to the Secretary of State and those interested in helping to reshape Michigan’s district lines will need to fill out an application. Commissioners are expected to be selected in next year and draw the new lines in time for the 2022 election. Lyons-Eddy, speaking to WPHM yesterday, says it is possible Michigan could loose a congressional district as the state’s population has not grown as fast as other states in the nation. Meanwhile, Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports the Michigan Freedom Fund filed a lawsuit to block the voter initiative that was approved by voters in 2018. Skubick says that supporters of the legislation are confident the lawsuit will be unsuccessful.
