Electronic cigarette, park closing time ordinances being considered by city

Port Huron City Council may be taking up the issues of vaping and park closing times, that according to Port Huron City Manager James Freed. Speaking to WPHM yesterday, Freed says the city is drafting an ordinance which would ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. “We want to treat e-cigarettes just like cigarettes,” said Freed. The city manager adds that he was made aware of the issue by school resource officers placed at Port Huron’s two high schools. The issue could be taken up by council during Monday’s regular session meeting. Freed also says it’s back to the drawing board for an ordinance that would set consistent closing times for city parks, beaches, and pools. “Some parks should be closed at dusk,” said Freed. However, he adds a “one size fits all policy” wouldn’t be prudent for the city’s softball fields and tennis courts. An ordinance setting a blanket 9pm closing time was tabled by council late last year. Freed also invites the public to attend the city’s 2019 goal setting session. That will be held at the city’s municipal office center February 19th.
