The identity of the off-duty Port Huron Police Officer who was shot dead early Friday morning in Clyde Township has been released. 45 year old Joel Wood of Greenwood Township was killed around 1am Friday August 24th at an apartment in the 4700 block of Atkins Road. Deputies responded to a report of shots fired with multiple victims, and upon arrival, a 29 year old woman and 57 year old man were found with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to McLaren Port Huron Hospital by EMS where they are recovering. The woman had been with Wood when the attack occurred and ran to the older man’s residence attempting to get away from the shooter. Speaking to WPHM this morning, Undersheriff Buckley says deputies, along with members of the Port Huron Police Major Crimes Unit and the Michigan State Police were able to track the suspect at a gas station on Telegraph Road in the city of Southfield. He was arrested with help from the Southfield Police Department shortly before 5:00 a.m and is described as a 36 year old Mount Morris man. The suspect was arrested without incident and is being housed in the St. Clair County Jail. Detectives from both the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and the Port Huron Police Department are continuing the investigation. He is expected to be arraigned on Sunday. At a press conference Friday afternoon, Port Huron Police Chief Joe Platzer says Wood was with the P.H.P.D. for 23 years and asks for the public to respect the privacy of the families involved.
