State officials are warning residents about scammers impersonating the Michigan Department of Treasury. Victims are told they owe money to the state and will face arrest, legal action, or suspension of business if not paid. Scammers are asking for cash through a wire transfer, prepaid debit card, or gift card. They may even be calling from a Lansing area number to make caller ID appear they are with the State of Michigan. The treasury department says they never ask for personal information over the phone or ask for payments in this matter.
