The Detroit Red Wings have agreed on a one year contract with free agent Andreas Athanasiou for $1.3875 million.  For the deal to become official the team had to make space available on the salary cap, and did so on Saturday afternoon with a pair of deals.  Forward Riley Sheahan was shipped to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with a 5th round draft pick in 2018 for forward Scott Wilson and a 3rd round pick in 2018.  Wilson had eight goals and 26 points for the Penguins last season.  In another move the Wings sent Ryan Sproul to the New York Rangers for forward Matt Puempel.  Both players saw limited action in the NHL last season, but both are currently playing in the minor leagues this year.  The departure of Sheahan, who makes over $2 million a season makes the necessary room under the cap for Detroit to add Athanasiou.
