A half million dollars in grants are heading to the City of Port Huron to benefit the McMorran Center and other recreational assets across the city. Announced Tuesday, the grant will benefit the outdoor plaza at the McMorran Center as well as other recreational facilities across the city. According to the St. Clair County Community foundation, $350,000 dollars will be used to redevelop the plaza on the east side of the McMorran center which will create the region’s first permanent outdoor ice skating rink. The remaining $150,000 will be offered in increments up to $10,000 to renovate outdoor tennis and basketball courts and play spaces at the city’s parks. The Community Foundation expects this round of grants to lead to at least fifteen newly rebuilt multi-purpose courts.  Nancy Winzer, director of McMorran Place, saays, “The complete redevelopment of the east outdoor plaza at McMorran will lead to a much more fully accessible play and gathering space. Along with other funding for this project we will build a new one-level, multi-purpose recreation plaza which will allow us to accommodate more outdoor events and recreation in the heart of downtown Port Huron.”
