It’s proposed economic relief for hundreds of thousands of low income and retired Michiganders. Governor Gretchen Whitmer during Thursday’s State of the State address called for an elimination of certain retirement taxes and an increase in the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit. She described the measures as keeping “More money in in peoples pockets” and they are expected to receive bipartisan support.

She also says capping insulin costs in Michigan will help put some relief on the pocketbooks of those hardest hit by inflation. The current average cost of insulin in Michigan is around $100. Under a bipartisan plan working it’s way through the legislature, that would be capped at $50 a month. Whitmer also called for a $2500 dollar rebate for the purchase of an electric vehicle and charging equipment.

The Governor also took a victory lap of sorts last night when it comes to her campaign promise to “Fix the damn roads” in Michigan.  She says since she took office, Michigan has repaired or rebuilt more than 13,000 miles of roads, and 900 bridges. She also highlighted her reinstatement of the prevailing wage as helping to provide “good-paying, skilled trades jobs” in Michigan. The speech was delivered without an audience last night at Detroit Diesel.
