The Detroit Red Wings ended up getting a highly thought of player with the sixth overall pick, taking forward Filip Zadina. The Czech player scored 44 goals last season for Halifax in the QMJHL and was considered to be the third best player available in the draft by most experts. The Wings also selected center Joe Veleno with the 30th pick in the first round. Veleno, only 18, had 22 goals and 79 points in the QMJHL splitting time between St. John’s and Drummondville. The Wings still have nine more selection in the seven round event, which concludes on Saturday with rounds 2-7 scheduled to take place.
