County commissioners to consider COVID-19 resolution

St. Clair County Commissioners are expected to draft a resolution coming out against state orders for masks and vaccines. During Thursday’s meeting, county commissioners heard public comments about the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, including calls to remove medical health officer Dr. Annette Mercatante from office. Speaking to our Paul Miller Friday, commissioner Greg McConnell says that is unlikely to occur.

“When you’re going to fire somebody based on opinion, and they’re doing what they feel as their job based on the information they recieved medically…. I’d have a tough time voting to get rid of (Mercatante),” McConnell told WPHM.

As far as that resolution goes, McConnell says its currently being reviewed by the county’s legal counsel, saying it “Doesn’t have any merit as far as governing,” but that it will show where the county stands on the issue. He adds there is currently no mask mandate in St. Clair County or in the State of Michigan, but if there was one reinstated by the state, there would be little that the commission could do to stop it.
