Effective 11:59pm March 20th, new restrictions will be placed on traffic crossing the Blue Water Bridge and other points of entry in the United States. This comes after President Trump Wednesday morning ordered borders to be closed to all non-essential traffic. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the following are examples of travel that will still be allowed on the Blue Water Bridge:

  • Individuals engaged in lawful cross-border trade
  • Those traveling for medical purposes
  • Individuals traveling to attend educational institutions
  • Individuals traveling to work in the U.S.
  • Those traveling for emergency response and public health purposes
  • Individuals engaged in official government travel or diplomatic travel
  • Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, their spouses or children returning to the U.S.
  • Individuals engaged in military-related travel or operations.

MDOT says they are following recommendations from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, including refusing cash payments for tolls. MDOT adds significant efforts have been made to ensure the safety of border crossings for both customers and staff.
