James Freed has the inside track for the position of city manager in Port Huron. By a unanimous decision Saturday afternoon the young manager of Stanton and Lakeview Michigan is up for a contract offer pending background checks. Council, during a special weekend meeting, listened to four potential candidates with Freed getting high scores from all seven councilmembers. He was a resident of the area in his youth and many councilmembers say they found him energetic with a desire to grow in his profession. He would replace Bruce Brown who is set to retire at the end of July. Brown, who was in attendance at the interviews, says he would work with Freed during the transition period. Mayor Pauline Repp says it could be a week or so before background checks are completed at which time a contract would be negotiated.
