Opiate painkillers, tranquilizers and stimulants can be safely and effectively used, but when taken too much, they carry significant risks. Health officials say that prescription drug abuse is the nation's fastest growing drug problem, so much so that the Centers for Disease Control has classified it as an epidemic. A session this week will address the topic, with it hosted by Jim Jones, who's an instructor at St. Clair County Community College and former Port Huron Police Captain. He says for those who've become addicted, there is help available in the local area. Health officials say more people abuse prescription medications than heroin, cocaine and ecstasy combined. The session will be Wednesday at 6:30pm at the senior center along North Mary Street in Marine City.
