Although the majority were sent to Brazil and the Caribbean, 6% (600,000-650,000) were taken to the United States. In total, between 10-11 million Africans were taken from their country.
Port Huron served as one of the key points in the Underground Railroad for freedom seekers. "Passage to Freedom: Secrets of the Underground Railroad" is the newest exhibit by the Port Huron Museum that highlights this event is Michigan history. The exhibit also features "Quilting Sisters: African American Quilting in Michigan" which records the patterns of migration of former slaves and documents ethnic identity in various quilting traditions. The exhibit will remain on display through Feb. 24, 2012. |
