With the first year of the new cut scores for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program, or MEAP, in place, local area school districts had mixed results. This past year the state adopted more stringent cut scores for the MEAP that represented career and college ready achievement standards, and Joann Hopper at the St. Clair County Regional Educational Service Agency says the school districts in the county will use the data to see what works and what's not working for students. Under the new scoring system, students had to get about 65% of the answers correct to pass the exams, instead of about 39% under the old standards. Statewide in reading, 62% of third-grade students, 68% of fourth-graders and 69% of fifth-graders attained proficiency.
