Michigan hunters could soon take aim at the gray wolf under a bill signed into law Friday by Governor Rick Snyder. The bill allows the state's Natural Resources Commission to establish a wolf-hunting license and removes the gray wolf from the furbearer list and adds it to the list of Michigan game species. There are an estimated 700 wolves in Michigan, mainly residing in the western Upper Peninsula. The measure sponsored by Republican Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba earned the wrath of the Humane Society of the United States. The organization's Michigan State Director Jill Fritz says it's not right to spend decades bringing the wolf back from the brink of extinction only to turn around and allow them to be killed for sport. Fritz said that it is already legal in Michigan to kill wolves that threaten livestock or dogs, making a trophy-hunting season unnecessary.
