As local students return to class this week, some of them and their parents may be a bit anxious as they think about school security and other matters in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting last month in Connecticut that left twenty children and six adults dead. The incident also led to several other school districts closing up early for their holiday break as various rumors circulated about students bringing or carrying guns or other weapons. Port Huron Police Chief Michael Reaves acknowledges that it may be hard to shake the incident off. Reaves says school officials and local law enforcement are engaging in talks about school security and student safety, with plans and polices to address any matters that may arise. He says when he began his post as Chief almost two years ago, one of his first moves was to assign patrol officers to randomly walk through the local school buildings, so officers could acquaint themselves with the facilities and layouts of all the buildings and grounds.
