NEW ALERT SYSTEM FLOATED

There are several ways to get an emergency message here in Saint Clair and Lambton Counties...but a fear has always been late at night or in the wee hours of the morning when residents don't often have their radios or televisions on.  An Alert FM receiver solves the problem with a hand held device that beeps when an emergency alert is issued....a digital display shows the warning.  Jeff Friedland of the local emergency management office believes a partnership with a neighboring township in Ontario will be the start of a good cross-border warning system.  St. Clair Township, Ontario covers a wide area along the Saint Clair River including several industries involved with chemicals. The formal announcement and the roll-out of the system...known as the Bluewater Community Alerting Network, was made Tuesday afternoon on the international border between Marine City and Sombra.  Governmental leaders from both sides of the border were on hand for the system launch.  The public is encouraged to purchase the devices which use the FM radio frequency by utilizing a portion of the transmission from local broadcasters.
