Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha each had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings closed out the pre-season with a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Petr Mrazek made 28 saves for the Wings, who open the regular season next Friday at home against Toronto.
No. 22 Michigan earned its second shutout in a row, blanking Maryland 28-0 on Saturday to improve to (4-1). The Wolverines held Maryland to 85 total yards on offense, including just 29 yards rushing on 26 carries. Jehu Chesson scored on a 66 yard run and caught four passes for 41 yards for U of M. Michigan is home to Northwestern next week.
No. 2 Michigan State had its hands full on Saturday in a 24-21 win over Purdue in the Spartans Big Ten league opener. LJ Scott rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns, while Madre London added 97 yards on the ground for MSU. State, now (5-0), will travel to Rutgers next week.
