The CEO of the organization charged with growing Michigan’s economy visited Port Huron yesterday. Jeff Mason, head of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, addressed the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce at an event yesterday afternoon. Mason touted the success of the Pure Michigan program and praised some of the local economic development projects such as Sperry’s Moviehouse, the Inn at Water Street in Marine City, and the St. Clair Inn. One of the issues the local area – and state as a whole – is concerned about is trade, especially with our neighbors to the east. Jeff Mason, speaking to WPHM yesterday says the North American Free Trade Agreement is working, however it should be “fine tuned” . Mason points to Michigan’s partnership with Canada for a new international crossing in Detroit as examples of collaboration despite rhetoric from DC. Another issue Mason addressed is the need for more dairy and agricultural processing plants in Michigan. Mason currently says many farmers have to transport their product across state lines – resulting in higher transportation costs.
